Multinationals and backward linkages in Polish agro-food production systems

چکیده

The paper tests for the backward linkage hypothesis of multinational firms in developing host economies. The empirical case is the Polish food industry expected to be a highly relevant European case as the largest magnet of ‘developing-oriented’ FDI over the last decade. Combining the case study, descriptive and econometric evidence suggests that backward linkage creation has failed in terms of upstream high-technology suppliers in food machinery, but succeeded in low-technology linkages with Polish farmers. However, the latter effect only results for those multinational linkages from the food industry to agriculture involving firms of non-EU origin. This result confirms the proximity hypothesis about backward linkages and geographic distance as forwarded by Rodriguez-Clare (1996). However, it could also reflect the bias that the Common Agricultural Policy introduces on backward linkage creation in the Polish food industry.

Spillovers Through Backward Linkages from Multinationals: Measurement Matters!

Spillovers Through Backward Linkages from Multinationals: Measurement Matters! We argue that the measures of backward linkages used in recent papers on spillovers from multinational companies are potentially problematic, as they depend on a number of restrictive assumptions, namely that (i) multinationals use domestically produced inputs in the same proportion as imported inputs, (ii) multinati...

Multinational Companies, Backward Linkages and Labour Demand Elasticities

Multinational Companies, Backward Linkages and Labour Demand Elasticities This paper investigates the link between nationality of ownership and wage elasticities of labour demand at the level of the plant. In particular, we examine whether labour demand in multinationals becomes less elastic with respect to the wage if the plant has backward linkages with the local economy. Our empirical eviden...

Creating backward linkages from multinationals: Is there a role for financial incentives?

We investigate whether government subsidies to local input manufacturers encourage procurement from foreign firms. We use a comprehensive panel data of Irish firms from 1983 until 2002. Our data shows a spontaneity about linkages and relative insensitivity to grant aid, although it may be the quality rather than quantity of linkages that matters. The longevity of a foreign firm’s stay is one co...
